Annice Morton | 4866 | |
Father : George Morton Mother : Martha Stocks Born : Wadsley, Bradfield, Yorkshire (1817) Annice was baptised on 28th December 1817 in Bradfield. Benjamin Silverwood would have needed a housekeeper after his wife Martha's death. Annice's uncle, Benjamin Morton, was a farmer in Upper Midhope and would have known Benjamin and may have introduced Annice to him. Her son, Enos, was born 8 months later on 12th December 1837. Annice spent a short time at Peck Hall, Bradfield at the time of Enos' illegitimate birth. Did she have friends or relatives there? In 1841, the farmhouse called Peck Hall had four households including William Thorpe, an Agricultural Labourer, and his wife Ann. Was Ann her cousin? On 22 December she was admitted to the Bradfield Workhouse, possibly to get medical attention and she also registered his birth. The Admission Register has "Annis Morton 20 and Enos her bastard 1 week: From Upper Midhope: four strings to her bow". Did this mean that she suggested four possible fathers? There is nothing about the birth in the Bradfield Bastardy Registers so the father was never identified. Annice was discharged from the Workhouse with Enos on 6 January 1838 and she returned to "Upper Midhope at her own desire" and she continued her work as housekeeper to Benjamin at Rushy Lee. Annice had another illegitimate child, Ellen, in 1839 and as she gave Benjamin's address, though not his name on the Birth Certificate - it was probably his. She married him in 1841 and their first child was born less than three weeks later. They went on to have nine more children. She married Benjamin Silverwood on 28th February 1841 at Bradfield and had twelve children, Enos MORTON, Ellen MORTON, Esther, Hannah, Timothy, Sidney, Henry, Barbara, Anne, Isaac, Jane & Ann. In 1841 the family resided at Upper Midhope, Bradfield, in 1851 at 20, Bump Hall, Hoylandswaine, at Stocksbridge between 1861 & 1871, in 1881 at Johnstone Street, Stocksbridge and was a Widow in 1891 residing at 13, Denton Buildings, Barnsley. Annice died of Old Age and Bronchitis at Penistone Union Workhouse on 22nd December 1899. |
