Inquest into the death of Henry Backhouse at Yarra Bend in 28th April, 1863.
Henry died from inflammation of the bowel, resulting from a burst abdominal ulcer. He had been diagnosed with a tumor in the left groin on the 22nd March 1863. He was sent to hospital on 26th March, where an abscess on his left hip was opened. The tumor ruptured, causing constant discharge. On the 24th April he was diagnosed with diabetes. He vomited on the 26th April, and complained of stomach pain on the 27th. By 3 p.m. he was in great agony and gradually sank. A post-mortem examination revealed numerous physical problems, including the fact that an abscess had burst into the abdominal cavity. We are told that his wife was with him when he died. Henry was admitted to the Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum on 24th July, 1861, suffering "sub-acute mania", and "in poor bodily health". While an inmate at the institution, he was employed in bricklaying.
