James Ephraim Hammerton Thickett2453

Father : Ephraim Thickett

Mother : Jane Ann Hammerton

Born : Houghton Le Street, Penshaw, Durham (Apr 1884 - Jun 1884)

He was a Scholar in 1891 an Apprentice Butcher in 1901 and a General Labourer in 1911. James married Lottie Dykes presumably in Barnsley, but more likely in Australia. This man is an enigma. According to his mothers death certificate he was born in 1885. However he appears to have been the same James Thickett, supposedly son of John Thickett of Helensburg, aged 21, who enlisted in the 30th Battalion in 1916 and was severely wounded at Passchendale in October 1917. However, John Thickett's death certificate claims he had no children. James was also a Coal Miner at the Metropolitan Mine at Helensburg. James died in 1960.

Between 1900 & 1904 he was a Foundry Glass Worker but was back to his old occupation as a Coal Miner in 1930 in Australia although he lost his sight in 1929. The 1926 electoral roll records that he was a labourer of Helensburg. He does not appear to have married. Tom died in 1965 and left no will and so the Public Trust distributed his estate of £282- 4 shillings and 8 pence.
