In 1871 she was listed as a Former Grocer and listed as an Annuitant in 1881 but was Living on her own means between 1891 & 1911. |

Thomas married Mary Ann Unknown and had four children, Mary Ann, Elizabeth Ann, Ann Eliza, Harriet Fanny. In 1851 the family resided at 35, Johns Street, Marylebone, London where he was listed as a House Painter and between 1861 and 1891 at 38, House Decorators Shop, Baker Street, Marylebone, London, listed as a House Painter, employing 23 men and 2 boys in 1881. He became a Decorative Painter who went to live in London and became well known for Marbling and Graining. Tom decorated Palaces & large houses around the country. Thomas was also a family man, with 19 children, 13 of whom died early in childhood. The master turned down commissions in St. Petersburg and Paris because of his love for and allegiance to his homeland and family. He was considered to be not only an artist but also an excellent businessman and promoter of the trade. Soon after completing his apprenticeship and journeyman phase, he vowed "hereafter to be no man´s servant but my own." His financial success? Well, when he died in the late 1800s, Tom left £148,000 to his beneficiaries, which by today´s standards would make him a multi-millionaire. All from wood graining and marbling. He died in 1898 in the district of Marylebone. |
