Elizabeth Greaves | 2306 | |
Father : William Greaves Mother : Sarah Parker Born : Sheffield, Yorkshire (1820) In 1841 she was lodging at Goose Hole, Worsbrough, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Elizabeth already had a son from a previous relationship, William Greaves, before she married (1) John Hammerton on 15th September 1841 at Sheffield and then had another four children, John, Elizabeth, Edmund & Arthur. In 1851 the family resided at 51, Pye Bank Sheffield. Eliza Hamnerton age 39 and John Hamnerton age 14 who arrived in Melbourne on the ship "Red Jacket" in July 1859. Steve Green obtained the microfiche of the hand written ship's passenger list. It shows that someone could have interpreted the double m as an m and an n. The list also shows that the ship left Liverpool in May 1859. I think Liverpool would be the logical port for a Sheffield person to leave from. The list also showed some confusion regarding whether they were English or Irish. John's age in the shipping record is a couple of years too low but Eliza's age matches Elizabeth's. If Eliza is our Elizabeth, it is strange that there is no family history here regarding her - but then there is little history of John's early years in Australia either. The search goes on. Fran Heap found the same shipping record in England. Elizabeth married (2) Robert Curtis on 13th November 1862 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. On 26th June 1880 she died in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. |
